Delicious Peppermint Buttercream Frosting

Peppermint really reminds me of the season. Candy canes, red and white and the smell, immediately I’m thinking Christmas. I thought what a better time to make a buttercream frosting but with a twist. If you have not seen my basic buttercream frosting click here. This frosting has a little more going on to balance the flavors happening but of course, you could use this recipe for a basic buttercream as well. Enough talking about it, let’s get into it!

The ingredients you need include butter, powdered sugar, shortening, peppermint extract, vanilla extract, milk and peppermint pieces.

Basically, you let your butter get to room temperature and then beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Cup by cup add the powdered sugar to the butter. Then add the shortening, the two extracts and a bit of milk and mix through. Lastly, crack your peppermint into small pieces. You could make them as fine as the ones on the top of the picture or as chunky as the ones on the bottom. Just remember, when you have larger pieces you can’t pipe a design because they will get stuck.

The buttercream is complete! It is ready to decorate with.

I frosted a chocolate cake because nothing compliments peppermint like chocolate.

My chocolate cake recipe is going up tomorrow so stay tuned for that one! I made a chocolate cake mix from the box but with a twist to make it even more delicious.
