Battered and glazed apple fritter on baking tray. Nearby, a measuring cup with glaze and a bowl of fried fritters on a paper towel. Wooden knife block, bright light.

Apple fritters felt like something intimidating to try but honestly they are really simple. Anything requiring frying and large amounts of oil always feels like an undertaking. That being said, it really was easier than I set myself up to believe.

My sister and brother-in-law brought over some green apples from their backyard and I knew I needed make some fall recipes. I used a recipe from How Sweet Eats. I highly recommend these delicious fall treats! They are a perfectly balanced, sweet and tart treat, especially during the fall season.

Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on the paper towel to drain excess grease. Repeat with remaining batter.

APPLE FRITTERS

Peel and dice your apples and set aside.

Heat a few inches of oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. You want the oil to reach about 350 degrees. Line a plate with paper towels.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, butter and vanilla. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Stir the chopped apples into the batter.

Once the oil is hot, drop ¼ cups of batter into the oil, only doing 1 or 2 at a time, and fry until golden on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Be sure to flip the fritter once or twice.

Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on the paper towel to drain excess grease. Repeat with remaining batter.

GLAZE

Whisk the sugar, vanilla and milk together until combined and smooth. If the mixture is too thick, add more milk 1 teaspoon at a time until it’s thin enough to dip the fritters.

Once the fritters are all finished and slightly cool, dip them in the glaze. Place them on a sheet of parchment paper and immediately sprinkle with flaked salt, if you have it. Serve right away!

You can also reheat them but they really taste best fresh and crispy. If you are going to reheat them, I recommend waiting to glaze them until you reheat them. Only glaze them right before serving.

These are honestly my new favorite fall sweet treat. Easy to make, delicious, and who doesn't love a donut?!?!
