If you missed last week's blog post, Apple Fritters, then you must have missed that I received a ton of apples from my sister and brother-in-law's backyard. With an excess of fresh apples, it only felt right to immediately make some fall apple treats.
I got this recipe from Well Made By Kiley, after seeing it on Instagram. Her recipe also included two different dips, a crème anglaise as well as "salted caramel". The caramel is definitely a healthier nuttier version of caramel so if you're looking for a true caramel sauce, use this recipe instead, also linked below!
INGREDIENTS
APPLE DIPPERS
1 cup All-Purpose Flour
1 tbs. Granulated Sugar
2 tsp. Baking Powder
½ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Cinnamon
¾ cup Buttermilk, at room temperature
½ cup Greek Yogurt
1 Egg, at room temperature
1 tsp. Vanilla Bean Paste or Extract
2 tbs. Salted Butter, melted & slightly cooled
3 Large Granny Smith Apples
2 tbs. All-Purpose Flour, for tossing the apple slices
Vegetable Oil, for frying
CINNAMON SUGAR COATING
½ cup Granulated Sugar
1½ tsp. Cinnamon
DIPS
INSTRUCTIONS
In a medium bowl, whisk together the 1 cup of flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
In a separate large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, Greek yogurt, egg and vanilla until well combined. Then as you continuously whisk, stream in the melted butter until fully incorporated.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet, and whisk until well just combined. The batter will be a little lumpy.
Fill a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven with Oil, filling ~2” in the pan. Heat on medium-high until it reaches 350 degrees F-370 degrees F.
Line a wire cooling rack with a thick layer of paper towels.
Prepare the cinnamon sugar by mixing together the sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl.
Slice the apples into large slices, getting about 6-8 slices from each apple, depending on how large you want them. Add the apple slices to a large bowl and sprinkle with the flour. Toss to coat the apples in the flour. This will help the batter stick to the apple slices.
Working in batches, drench the apples slices into the batter and slightly shake off any excess. Drop them directly into the hot oil and fry each side for 1-2 minutes (2-4 minutes total), until deep golden brown.
Once finished, use a slotted spoon to carefully remove the apples from the oil and transfer to the rack with paper towels. Repeat with the remaining apple slices and batter.
While the other apples are frying, dip the warm fried apples into the cinnamon sugar mixture, making sure to roll and coat both sides. Then place onto a cooling rack or piece of parchment paper.

Also, tell me why these look like vegan chicken wings... LOL. Anywho I served them with a Shortcut Caramel Sauce, which is honestly more like a thinned out almond butter. Definitely adds a nice nutty flavor to the overall dessert.
The inside should be soft and warm when you bite into it. The cinnamon sugar coating adding an extra layer of sweetness to balance the tart green apple.
This is a great fall treat for all your hosting and celebrations. Definitely taste the best fresh so don't plan to make these too far in advance or else they will get soft and cold! Plan to whip them up right before your guests arrive, so they can enjoy that perfect crunch and cozy warmth.
